Google Gemini review (2026): pricing, features and who it's for

Two prices, one plan name

Google's own pages disagree with each other. On gemini.google, Google AI Plus is $4.99 a month with 400 GB of storage. On one.google.com, a plan with that same name is $9.99 a month with 2 TB. Both figures are live on Google properties (as of August 2026).

We are not going to pick one for you, because we cannot tell which one your card gets charged. Before you buy, check which page you are on and what storage the plan says it includes. If the price says $9.99, you are buying the 2 TB version of it.

The rest of the ladder is consistent. Free is $0 with a Google Account. Google AI Pro is $19.99 a month. Google AI Ultra starts at $99.99 a month, with a $199.99 tier above it. Google says you can cancel anytime.

The free plan gives away more than the other two

Free runs on the Google Account you already have. No separate signup and no card.

You get chat, image generation and editing, a research mode, the live voice mode, and 15 GB of storage shared with Gmail, Drive and Photos. File uploads work on free, up to 10 files in one prompt at up to 100 MB each. Photos work on free. Talking to it works on free.

No daily upload cap is documented, and no ads are documented on the free Gemini plan. Put that next to ChatGPT's 3 uploads a day and its stated ads in some countries, and free Gemini is the more generous place to start for a shop that mostly writes and now and then uploads a spec sheet.

What paying adds for documents is a bigger working memory for large files, marketed on the higher tiers as handling up to 1,500 pages of uploads. That is a larger version of something you already have, not a feature that was locked.

Hands-free with the phone in your pocket

Gemini Live is the hands-free mode, and it is on the free tier. You can start it by saying "Hey Google, let's talk Live". You can use your phone and other apps while it is running. If Gemini on lock screen is switched on, the conversation carries on after you lock the phone.

One setup step gets missed. Live with Gemini notifications must be turned on for background or locked screen use. Do that before you rely on it in the field.

This is a phone answer, not a dashboard answer. OpenAI publishes a CarPlay integration for ChatGPT. Google's documented story is a voice command, background running and a locked screen. For a tech in a crawlspace with a flashlight in one hand, the locked screen version is the more useful of the two. For someone driving between calls on an iPhone, CarPlay wins.

What paying gets a crew

Drafting inside Gmail is the thing to pay for. On the consumer plans, Gemini in Gmail starts at Google AI Plus, not on free. Free means writing in a Gemini tab and pasting into your email. Paid means writing it where the thread already is.

If you want email on your own domain, buy Google Workspace instead and Gemini comes with it. Business Starter is $7 per user a month, Business Standard is $14 and Business Plus is $22, all list monthly prices. Gemini in Gmail is on every Workspace tier including Starter. Gemini in Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, Meet and Chat starts at Standard.

Run it for a small crew. You, an office manager and a lead tech on Business Standard costs $42 a month, and that buys three real email addresses on your own domain as well as the assistant. Three Google AI Pro accounts would cost about $60 and give you no company email at all.

Google states a 16% saving for a one year commitment, and a 14 day free trial of Workspace. That trial is the only free trial of a paid plan we can point to across all three of these assistants.

What we could not find out, and who should buy

An honest limit on this review. We could not find accounts from trade owners running Gemini in a home service business, so nobody below is describing your day. Talk about AI assistants in the trades is dominated by one brand right now, and this one barely comes up. What we did find is a clear pattern among people who pay the $20, and it is about what the money buys rather than what the model does. "If you already have openai or anthropic then you'd essentially just be buying storage," wrote one subscriber who upgraded from a storage-only plan and ended up paying for a second assistant anyway. The people who keep it agree on the reason without meaning to. One said it is worth $20 to him because "the fee includes 5TB of cloud storage and the ability to watch creator YouTube videos without ads". Another pays for the cheaper Plus tier and finds it plenty, having dropped ChatGPT because he does not need an assistant for coding or complex work.

Read that as the buying advice it is. If your shop already pays for Google storage, the AI is close to free and worth switching on. If you already pay for another assistant, you are mostly buying drive space. And one more thing worth knowing if you sell your hands for a living: the users who rate it highest describe using it to avoid hiring you. "It’s find me ways to repair things on my own, where before I’d hire an expert," one wrote.

Two limits out of that documentation are worth carrying into a decision. Files cap at 100 MB each, and a scanned service manual can beat that on its own. And support on the consumer plans is help articles plus a public user forum, with no direct channel to Google. Workspace plans are the ones that include Google support.

Use the free plan if you already have a Google Account, which covers most shops. Buy Workspace Business Starter at $7 per user if you want company email and drafting inside Gmail on one bill. Buy Google AI Pro at $19.99 only if you want the larger file handling and you do not need email on your own domain.

Skip it if your paperwork is fat scanned manuals, and skip it if you want everything running off a CarPlay screen.
